Organica, You are making a big scandal out of this. I was going say the person who wrote this is very tactless and unrefined. But, the way you are dealing with it is just as tactless! This is just embarrassing to all of us muslims, and it serves no good purpose to splash it all over the internet like this.
I know this is too much to ask... but did you try to get them to take it down? If not, then what is point of publishing it like this? And even if you did its not like its a general phenomena that needs to be addressed by the public! Its an individual's mistake and you are making us all pay for it !
I'm sorry I came off a bit too strongly. I just believe some things are better addressed in private. One should try to balance pros and cons of a certain situation. What harm is this sign doing? And how does showing it to everyone around the world harm/benefit your cause ? Again, I'm sorry I'm thinking/talking too much into this. I'm just trying to establish a principal.
oh well :) .. I wrote the second comment before I read your "sense of humour comment" . Well I guess I just didn't get it... sigh... I anticipated a cyber war !
I understand what you mean and understand your sentiments. Sometimes it's best to not air everything out there and keep it to ourselves; however, I'm finding that method isn't really working, is it?
I didn't say much about the above photo. I didn't mention fatwas, etc exclaiming the different opinions regarding women entering the Mosque. That's not the point here.
The point here is I was entering into a new Mosque (out of state) and I read the sign and FOUND IT HILARIOUS.
You can react to it the way you like :) I just put it out there.
Salams I think it has already been established that the "let's not air the Muslim dirty laundry" argument is almost always used against women. This photo is both literal and figurative proof :)
I know that menstruating women aren't allowed to be in the prayer hall and all, but sometimes the way people go about doing this is ridiculous.
I went to a masjid nearby my hometown and the lady made my sister sit outside on the stairs, and when my sister said she would sit in the back and just wanted to listen to the jummah khutba... the lady said no and made her sit outside.
I thought it was too harsh. And this sign is just downright ridiculous but hilarious as well. I wonder what kind of conversation occurred between the men (I assume) prior to putting this up lol!
The reasons why I asked if the mosque was desi was because desi people (and some other people) have a lot of misconceptions of religion imported from Hinduism or Judaism. The fact that a menstruating women is unclean is from there. I am sure Achelois can oblige with some research! :-)
But there is no bar on menstruating women in the mosque.
Mezba i think you are totally wrong. Do you do any research before making your religious verdicts. Your addicition with trying to stay away from everything "desi" to do with islam has more than once resulted in you just giving incorrect advice on religious matters (see your post on talaq). Please see the attached linked and just to make it clear there is no difference of opinion on whether a women can enter a masjid in this state. IT IS NOT ALLOWED. How to communicate that to attending women is another issue.
Yep, I'd say this falls into the taking things too far category. First they obsess with what we are or are not wearing, and now they obsess over this...Lord help us is right...feel like starting a rant but I'll spare everyone the pleasure.
I think what's somewhat upsetting to me is that these things somehow only happen in women's issues!!
I'm sure there's no sign in the brother's section saying... "brothers in janaba do not go beyond this point".
And if there has to be a sign, obviously the mosque is not well built. Most mosques I go to have a place behind the prayer area for women that's not considered by shari`a "mosque" with chairs and so women can sit and listen to the khutba and attend friday prayer even if they're menstruating.
Well I would just like to leave a comment not on the sign itself, but on the "better not to spread it".
I think exactly the contrary. I'm not Muslim, and Organica's blog, with her openess, sincerity and conviction, is one of the places where I something more important than "learning about Islam" : it was understanding Muslim people, get an idea of feelings, of how to handle being Muslim in a non Muslim country, etc... she made me laugh very often, like today, and sometimes also I got angry, upset or sad with her.
The reflex of the "perfect surface, closed door and let's deal with that inside" is doing, imho, more wrong than anything to Muslim community. Not willing to say "this is stupid" does not make it intelligent, it just make other people doubt the intelligence of the personn who does not say anything. Again, I understand that there is here also some cultural differences, but well... the "open door day" should not be limited to a perfect presentation
If I hadn't read Organica's and others' blogs, I would not understand that you can be feminist and at the same time not even consider a second not wearing a hijab, amidst other things. Making fun at such a stupid board is part of it :)
I don't know whether to laugh or cry ... maybe both.
Personally, I would ignore the sign and walk in regardless; after all they are hardly going to check. But I would definitely talk to the people who are responsible for this.
As for the fatawa which have been posted here in order to support differing opinions ... a fatwa ist just the conclusion of a particular scholar, not more, not less. Not to mention the fact that many of the ulema have some very strange preconceptions and prejudices against menstruating women. :|
You can find a fatwa to support almost every opinion should you wish to do so. So throwing fatawa at each other as a sort of "proof" does not really make sense imho. Better to read the Qur'an, study the issue from all sides and then arrive at your own conclusion which you can then use as a basis for further discussion.
I'm still thinking of this and it really bothers me. What do they care if a menstruating woman enters? Assuming they believe it to be not allowed, the woman is the one doing it. Just makes me shake my head. And my fist.
I'm sort of late but that picture is unvelievable. I'm afraid to find something like that at Madrid's Masjid sooner or later.
We don't have actually a place to attend khutba while menstruating, although there is a void space by the prayer hall where we sit and listen. I find it very natural _making your place from a regular void place, but truth is, there is no room for women in their periods to gather on Friday.
Again, and as Achelois did write at her blog, it's perhaps considered that menstruating women are sick and should *rest* at home.
Thanks Allah Aisah (may God bless her) never did it.
The mosque here in tampa says women with childen please sit in the adiminstation building there will be speakers for you! I got back in my car and left!
39 reflections:
Wow. Unbelievable.
Is this a desi mosque?
Mezba, not very sure. I was a visitor at the mosque.
WHAT???????????????????????

Phobos:
It's called a sense of humor.

Salams

Lol
It sound read "Beware menstruating women, we know if you are on"
Achelois, LOL!!!!!!!!!!!! Sniffer dogs??? Wait, aren't dogs najis??? :P
Hahahahaaaa
Hahahahaha! Probably an idiot posted it!! Maybe the alarm would sound off when someone who's in that state walks past that sign!!! SF :D

lol what possessed them to post this? Were there issues in the past? Even Aishah walked through the mosque on those days.

Mezba, you are quite right. Maybe I'll do a post on my research :)
Caraboska, Yes they are najis :) Double jeopardy!
omg, hilarious...
Oh boy lol.
The title says it all! :)
It's like people need to be taught every single thing from A to Z,assuming ignorance on every woman who visits the mosque.
"How do they check?"
Special scent dictactors? :)
Lat
LOL.
I can't believe someone would think to do that.
THis is my first time at your blog and I love it!!
You made my day :)

disgusting. this is why i don't go to masjid anymore.
Wow ! Wonderful sign that is !
As for how to check: tampon's a handy thing :P
How would they check? Bloodhounds of course lol.
The sign is hilarious.
Well said everyone, and thank you for your comment. I'm still laughing over this sign :)
I don't know whether to laugh or cry ... maybe both.

What would the sign read during 'Eid I wonder.
